Q&A: What Should Be A Good Skin Care Regimen?

Well, many women has the same common question in their minds. And many of the websites and blogs have already answered the same question as well. But this silly mind gets diverted and tempted on seeing a new product. We hope for that product to work well on us. Different skin care regimens around the globe diverts us to try it and we keep changing the regimen. But that's not the main problem. The main problem arises when we get confused about the regimen, disturb it and unfollow it. So, it's important to have a clear idea on what steps are must dos.

Our elders didn't follow regimens like ours but they're still gorgeous. So, isn't their regimen perfect? They follow old traditional remedies. They use multani mitti, ubtan, natural home made remedies. Obviously they are the best. But unfortunately time has changed. I'm not talking about shortage of time. We are quite busy to prepare and use all these but that's also not the issue. Problem is the environment. Pollution has increased a lot with time and so, we need extra care. Plus we all have different types of skin for which we need to choose products and prepare a good skin care regimen based on it. So, here I'm going to talk about skin types as well.

    1. Normal Skin

You're so lucky that you have normal skin type. Every girl dreams to have normal skin. To keep your skin healthy and normal the same way, start following a simple and good skin care regimen.

Morning: Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer with SPF

Wash your face with a good face wash, tone your skin with rose water or alcohol free toner and then dab some moisturizer which should have minimum SPF 15. Make sure you never avoid sunscreen. Reapply when needed.

Night: Cleanser, Toner, Antioxidant Serum/Night Cream

If you've applied makeup then make sure you remove it properly at any cost before going to bed. This is a must step. Tone your skin as usual and then apply good antioxidant serum or some aloevera gel. If you're in your late 30s and above then apply good anti-ageing night cream.

    2. Dry Skin

If you've dry skin then make sure to keep your skin well hydrated all the time.

Morning: Cleanser, Toner, Antioxidant Serum, Moisturizer with SPF

Wash your face with a good face wash, tone your skin with rose water or alcohol free toner and then dab antioxidant serum. Look for vitamins A, C and E in it. This will prevent collagen breakdown in your skin. Now apply some moisturizer which should have minimum SPF 15. Make sure you never avoid sunscreen. Reapply when needed.

Night: Cleanser, Toner, Retinol Serum, Eye Cream, Hydrating Cream

As usual cleanse your skin, tone and then apply some retinol serum. This will penetrate deep into the skin and keep it hydrated. Then apply eye cream and a good hydrating night cream or gel.

Scrubs & Peels: Exfoliate your skin twice a week since dry skin has more dead cells compared to other skin types. Scrub and apply a good moisturizer to damp skin. You can use peels once a week.

    3. Oily Skin

You have excess oil which if not cleansed properly can lead to pimples and acne. So, extra care should be taken.

Morning: Cleansing Gel, Toner, Water-based Moisturizer, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

Gel based cleansers and facewashes are made specially for oily skin type. It cleanses skin deeply removing excess oil. Use it regularly and then tone using alcohol free toner. Never used oil based moisturizer. Always prefer water based moisturizer and if you're using sunscreen separately, prefer zinc oxide one since it gives matte finish to skin.

Night: Cleansing Gel, Toner, AHA/BHA serum, Retinol Serum, Water-based Moisturizer

Cleansing and toning remains the same as above but coming to serum, choose Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids or Beta-Hydroxy-Acids since they help in reducing pore size and brighten dull spots. If you've acne-prone skin, then look for salicylic acid and tea tree oil in the ingredients. Apply retinol serum as well since this also helps in making your skin pore size smaller. Water based moisturizer is preferred as recommended before as night cream.

Clay Mask: Clay masks are best known to absorb excess oil from skin. Use it once or twice a week.

    4. Combination Skin

If you've combination skin, then watch where you've dry skin and where you've oily skin. Your T-zone must be oily while your cheeks must be dry. As the name says, you too need to use a combination of two skin care regimens (dry and oily).

Morning: Cleansing Gel/Lotion, Toner, Lightweight Moisturizer, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

Sometimes gel might be too drying for cheeks and perfect for T-zone; and the lotion might be perfect for cheeks but insufficient for T-zone. Try to find a good product in-between these two which might suit your entire face. If you couldn't then try to maintain both. Apply the gel on your T-zone and lotion on your cheeks. So, this was little critical. Toning is always simple. If you can't find a good toner, rose water is always handy since it suits all skin types. Coming to moisturizer, choose water based and oil free, lightweight moisturizer which will hydrate your cheeks and won't make your T-zone oily. But if required, you can keep two products in this step as well based on your skin. You'll need to use two products only if your oily zone is too oily and your cheeks are too dry; else not necessary. Keep the sunscreen handy always as suggested before.

Night: Cleansing Gel, Toner, AHA/BHA Serum, Retinol Serum, Lightweight Moisturizer

Use all the products as suggested for mornings. And use AHA/BHA serum in the nights along with a good night cream.

Clay Masks & Scrubs: Exfoliate your entire facial skin especially dry skin areas for sure and hydrate with a  good moisturizer. If not cheeks, apply clay mask to your oily zone twice a week to get rid of excess oil.

    5. Sensitive Skin

If your skin gets red and irritated very easily, then you got sensitive skin.

Morning: Cleansing Lotion, Alcohol-free Toner, Scent-free Gentle Moisturizer, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

You need to be very choosy. Don't choose gel based face wash since it may make your skin too dry or irritate it. Get lotion instead and opt for alcohol-free toner or just some rose water. Don't go for scented and strong moisturizers. Choose gentle moisturizers for your skin. Zinc oxide sunscreens are always better for you.

Night: Cleansing Lotion, Alcohol-free Toner, Scent-free Moisturizer

Use these products as suggested above.

Gel Masks & Lactic Acid Serums: You may not be able to use harsh products for exfoliation. So, try using lactic acid based product or peel. If possible try glycolic acid but lactic acid is milder than this. Try using gel based face masks since gel can give your skin cooling effect which it needs.
